The Bachelor

What kind of culture is television reflect back at us today?

DESCRIBE:
I have been watching “The Bachelor” all season so far. This is actually my first season watching and as I have been told it is very addicting. A brand new episode comes out on Mondays. The episode I will be explain on my blog is from Monday, the 28th 2013 on the ABC network.  This is a reality TV show that features; drama, romance and it’s the perfect show for me. It steals women’s hearts by having this very attractive man looking for the girl he wants to spend the rest of his life with. It starts out with at the most 26 women and he chooses who leaves and stays with just a rose.
In this particular episode “The Bachelor” Sean Lowe sends the date card in the house, it has all the names of the ladies that get one on one dates during the week. This week he also sent diamond earrings to one of the ladies; Leslie Hughes, asking if it will be forever? Although the date was lovely Sean didn’t feel the spark. If you have seen the episode you would know that it was not forever, Sean decided to let her go. Like in every episode ‘Tierra LiCausi’ stirs up dram and gets Sean’s full attention by saying that she “didn’t like all the drama and mean girls in the house” when really she is the one that is the drama started. The poor handsome Sean is stuck in her trap of lies.
The Director of the show is Mike Fleiss and the host of The Bachelor is Chris Harrison. He has been the host since 2002, along with the director. Chris was a sports reporter for CBS in Oklahoma before being a host for ABC.
Most of the brands and products during the commercial were online dating sites and women’s products, such as E Harmony and Covergirl. While I was watching it, the commercials were the upcoming shows that were going to be on.

ANALYZE:
The girls that are chosen to be in the house tend to be one or the other. You are either a sweet heart or a snob that gets everything they want. They talk like they are from the city and they think that they know it all. Then you have the country girls that grew up close to their families. Those girls are the ones that Sean seems to like more because he cares a lot about his own family. The ladies in the house dress nice and they mostly try to keep it classy. I notice that some of them only where towels.
Most of the shows on TV these days are aimed to a certain audience. The Bachelor particularly is aimed towards single women. When anyone watches TV it has to be able to get their attention, it has to make them watch more and more of it. Such as “Jersey Shore”, I have seen every episode; I am not even your typical partying girl either. I just got so attached to it. What makes it unique and different? Well there are 26 girls fighting over one man. I’m pretty sure that’s a very different show compared to others, I don’t think it would pass “Honey Boo Boo” though.  I don’t actually believe you can “fall in love” with someone you just met, especially when you only get a little bit of time to get to know them. Although it isn’t love, it is interesting to watch them try to fall in love.

INTERPRET:
Plenty of people have stereotyped this show. I can personally say that I have stereotyped it. I was not a fan before this season, but now that I know what it’s really about, I actually enjoy watching what goes on.
The target audience as was said is single women or any women. The commercials show make up and dating websites. It totally makes sense, the more women that watch the more that buy the make-up on the commercial.
If I were a visitor to the United States I would probably think this show is disrespectful. I am not sure people from other countries would like that girls throw themselves out there on TV.

Evaluate:
This show has some strengths and weaknesses. The strengths would be the way they promote Sean to be such a gentleman. It’s hard to find men like that now a days and it gives people hope. There are probably many weaknesses from other people’s opinions, although I haven’t got to watch all 17 seasons I think that I would need to watch more seasons to find weaknesses before completing shutting the show out. This show is a mix of “real life” and a parody. It definitely shows how hard it can be to trust people. Those people that want to find love but can’t find it, can watch the show and get that feeling of hope. If they use the tricks that Sean has up his sleeve, I believe that any man could find someone to love them. Sean can teach men about being genuine and how the love for his family really makes women love him more. Here is a link of Tierra, and how some of the drama is starting to stir up with her.

ENGAGE:
I watch this show at work every Monday; it truthfully makes me happy that it is Monday. I have some friends on Facebook that watch it. Other than that my boyfriend thinks it’s a dumb show so I have no one at home to talk to about it.  I am a fan of the show on twitter, and I also follow @SeanLowe on Twitter.

I couldn't find to much on the producers of The Bachelor but i did find an interesting link on what is going on with them right now.

CONCLUSIONS:
I have learned some new things about the producers and I also looked up some reviews about the earlier seasons. They have made other shows from The Bachelor, such as The Bachelor Pad and the Bachelorette. I was very surprised that there has been 17 seasons all together.

  1. This grabbed my attention because I am a sucker for reality television. I didn't see any posts that were on a reality television, other than ghost hunters. I have never watched this show, but have watched far too many VH1 dating shows. It was interesting to find out, how the show is planned with the dates and him choosing who gets to stay and who gets to go. I agree that I don't think you can fall in love on television. It is something that cannot be forced, but at the same time is spontaneous. Here is a link to another dating show I have seen.http://love-games.oxygen.com/

  2. The reason for this blog post grabbing my attention would be the fact that The Bachelor is my go to guilty pleasure. Well to be honest, reality TV is my guilty pleasure, but The Bachelor is one of my favorites. I mostly like it because it really intrigues me that some people can claim they "love" someone after only one meeting or seeing of each other. Very bizarre but addicting to watch! Also I noticed that there wasn't many other reality TV show posts which I thought was interesting because I feel like reality TV is really taking over the cable world. Here is a link to my other favorite reality TV series, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.. this YouTube clip is of the best of Scott Disick, who is one of the Kardashian's husband and he is my favorite person on the show.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3vi7UkrRJU
